Below are my streaming recommendations for September across all of the major streaming platforms. This month, I paid tribute to Dolly Parton and made sure you were tracking where to stream a film whose sequel comes out this month. As always, I have tried to include multiple genres so I can hit all different tastes and moods. My hope is that I can spotlight new titles, as well as some previous releases that you may not have seen before!
Apple TV
Slow Horses (2026 series, 6 seasons)
SLOW HORSES may be the most consistently good series on Apple TV. Set in London, this espionage thriller follows a dysfunctional team of MI5 agents as they seek to defend England from domestic threats. Gary Oldman is at his peak, playing the deceptively brilliant Jackson Lamb, leader of the Slough House, a part of MI5 where failed agents are supposed to go to fade into obscurity. But, of course, that’s not how Lamb sees it and he is determined to ensure their work still matters. Also, you just may be watching the next James Bond as co-star Jack Lowden is rumored to be in top contention to be the next 007.

HBO Max
Practical Magic (1998 film)
PRACTICAL MAGIC is a must-see, not only as we head into spooky season but as a lead-up to the sequel coming out September 10. Admittedly, this film is in my top favorite films of all time, so I will always be biased. I love the film’s witchy vibes, phenomenal soundtrack (featuring music from the coven CEO herself, Stevie Nicks), and of course, the chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. This movie is an all-timer for me, and I hope the fervor around the new film will bring more people to discover what a banger the original film is.

Fuze (2026 film)
I first saw FUZE at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and have been excited for its wider release ever sense. What starts as a story about a World War II-era bomb being discovered in London and needing to be diffused turns into an exciting heist thriller, featuring an all-star cast led by Theo James, Sam Worthington, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. This film is one that you think you will know where it’s going, until it turns on a dime and goes in a different direction.

Lion (2026 docuseries, 1 season)
LION is an unprecedented 4-part coming-of-age docuseries that follows a male lion, Kio, in the Maasai Mara from the time he was a cub until he is a full-grown adult. This series was precarious from the very beginning because many lion cubs do not make it to adulthood, so hinging the entire series on the survival of one lion was a huge risk. The documentarian filmmakers spent four years following Kio and his family, hoping he would eventually make it to adulthood and to a family of his own. I won’t spoil what happens, but this sweet story, which teaches you so much about lion prides and behavior, will make anyone a lion lover.

Steel Magnolias (1989 film)
I had to put a Dolly Parton movie on the list this month, and my favorite Dolly movie will always be STEEL MAGNOLIAS. I know this is a movie you probably don’t need a recommendation for, but I wanted to highlight that it and 9 TO 5 are streaming now on Netflix. STEEL MAGNOLIAS is a top-tier, female-led comedy about a small-town group of Southern women who come face-to-face with the joys and tragedy of life. Coming from a small-town Southern town myself, I love how the film leans into amplifying the “characters” that populate most towns… I know I can picture my own Truvy Jones (Parton) cutting hair at the local beauty salon.

The Pastor’s Wife (2026 docuseries, 1 season)
Whereas STEEL MAGNOLIAS shows more of the good-natured community of a small Southern town, THE PASTOR’S WIFE shows when that same community can have evil lurking within. This 3-part true crime series follows the tragic life of Mica Miller. The series explores how Miller’s husband J.P. Miller, a preacher in South Carolina, allegedly made her life a living hell through domestic abuse, coercive control, and stalking. When Mica is found dead in 2024, it unlocks a flood of stories about the sinister activities of her husband and how he was able to use his position in the church to shield years of abuse. This case is still ongoing and once the series ends, I imagine you will spend a ton of time researching what’s happening now.

Lioness (2026 series, 3 seasons)
LIONESS is perhaps one of the most underrated series on television right now and has been consistently great across its three seasons. I recently caught up on season three and was happy that the series continues to be smart, thrilling, and most of all fierce. The series follows Joe (Zoe Saldaña), the leader of a CIA all-female group of operatives that go into harm’s way, against the world’s most dangerous targets, to keep the country safe. Nicole Kidman also stars as Joe’s boss and senior CIA officer. The series is rounding out season three over the next couple of weeks, which gives you just enough time to catch up!

Promising Young Woman (2020 film)
PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN is one of my go-to movie suggestions when someone wants something a little off the beaten path. This film is one of my all-time favorites, and one that shocked me more than any other in the last twenty years. Without getting into spoilers, it is an audacious, black comedy thriller that features a woman (Carey Mulligan) that lives a double life seeking revenge on the men that have harmed her and other women. This is a movie that I love watching other people watch to see their reactions in some of the more surprising moments.

Happy Death Day (2017 film)
You know those movies that you wish you had thought to write? HAPPY DEATH DAY is one of them. Half GROUNDHOG DAY, half SCREAM, the film’s interesting concept imagines a college girl, Tree (Jessica Rothe) repeating each day until she can find out the identity of her murderer. Between narrowing down your suspect list and watching Tree get more and more annoyed by the elements that repeat in her life every day, the film builds to an exciting and surprising climax.

Prime
Catastrophe (2015 series, 4 seasons)
Sharon Horgan is a mastermind and I will watch anything she makes. Not only is CATASTROPHE hilarious, but it is a super easy watch and has one of the best couples on television. What starts as a fish-out-of-water story about an American (Rob Delaney) who accidentally gets an Irish woman (Sharon Horgan) pregnant while on a business trip to London, turns into a really sweet and smart comedy-romance about the couple growing together and starting a family. Carrie Fisher also starred on the show before her death and is absolutely amazing in it!
